Gideon Weisz | Sculpture + Jewelry Portfolios

In 2013, I participated in the 3rd annual
Community Supported Art (CSArt)
program at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

Nine artists participated, each creating an edition of 50 pieces. At the "harvest" shareholders each received a bag with pieces from all of the artists.

I've created a limited edition set of 50 unique variations on the two orbit trefoil knot, in colorful 3D printed nylon.

Two Orbit Trefoil Knot
Trefoil knots are among the simplest of knots, with the potential for many elegant shapes. My variation takes the path of the knot and follows it around twice, connecting to itself in one continuous loop. The two parallel edges form a mobius strip tied in a knot.

I started the creative process with wire models, bending and shaping them by hand, refining them into two pleasing shapes: knotA and knotB. I wrote custom software to model those knots on the computer, and used the software to make 25 unique variations of both knots; each a step in an animation of the two parallel paths rotating around each other.

I sent the computer model files to a 3D printer, a machine that built the knots up one layer at a time, from white nylon powder, fused together with a laser. I dyed each knot by hand, in order, across the spectrum of visible colors.
